The Introduction to Cybersecurity course is a standalone, part-time program designed for individuals looking to build a strong foundation in cybersecurity. This hands-on course covers essential cybersecurity concepts, tools, and techniques used to identify, analyze, and mitigate security threats. Participants will engage in practical projects, gaining experience with industry-standard tools such as Nmap, Wireshark, and BurpSuite while learning core security methodologies. Local mentor support will be available through office hours for questions and material discussions. 

Course Description

Introduction to Cybersecurity

This program serves as an entry point for individuals aspiring to enter the field of cybersecurity or professionals looking to enhance their understanding of security principles.

Graduates of the Introduction to Cybersecurity course will have foundational cybersecurity skills that qualify them for entry-level and junior positions in the cybersecurity and IT security fields. While advanced cybersecurity roles require further specialization, this course provides knowledge and hands-on experience to pursue the following positions:

  1. IT Support Specialist (with Security Focus)
  2. Security Operations Center (SOC) Analyst – Level 1
  3. Junior Cybersecurity Analyst
  4. Network Technician (with Security Responsibilities)
  5. IT Technician / Help Desk Specialist (Security-Oriented)
  6. Penetration Testing Intern / Junior Security Tester
  7. Digital Forensics Assistant

Course Objectives

By completing this course, participants will:

  1. Understand fundamental cybersecurity concepts, including network security, web vulnerabilities, and cryptographic principles.
  2. Develop practical skills in reconnaissance techniques, vulnerability identification, and security assessment.
  3. Gain proficiency with essential cybersecurity tools such as Nmap, Wireshark, and BurpSuite.
  4. Learn the basics of ethical hacking, including offensive vs. defensive security strategies.
  5. Explore digital forensic methodologies and ethical considerations in cybersecurity.

Expected Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will:

  • – Be able to conduct basic security assessments and vulnerability scans.
  • – Understand key security threats and mitigation techniques.
  • – Have hands-on experience with reconnaissance, packet analysis, and web security testing.
  • – Develop a foundational knowledge of cybersecurity tools and techniques.

  • – Have the necessary knowledge and skills to successfully complete the following certifications: CompTIA Security+, eJPT  and CompTIA Linux+.  The course does not include the test administration or exam voucher fees.

Background Requirements

To ensure success in this course, participants should have:

  • – Basic Computer Skills: Familiarity with operating systems, file systems, and basic command-line usage.
  • – Networking Fundamentals (Recommended): Understanding of IP addressing, protocols, and networking concepts is helpful but not required.
  • – Problem-Solving Mindset: Cybersecurity requires analytical thinking and an investigative approach to identifying threats.
  • – Eagerness to Learn: No prior cybersecurity experience is necessary, but a willingness to explore and experiment is essential.

This course is ideal for IT professionals, students, and anyone interested in learning cybersecurity fundamentals in a structured, hands-on environment.

How to enroll

  • To enroll in the Intro to Cyber Security course, you must pass an assessment to help us evaluate whether you have the necessary foundational knowledge to successfully complete the course. There is no cost to the test.

  • You will have 60 minutes to complete the assessment, and we ask you not to do internet searches, Google answers or use AI tools to complete it. Answer each question to the best of your knowledge without outside help. After all, by taking this test, you are also determining whether this is the right course for you, or whether you need to strengthen any areas to be ready to take this next step.

  • After finishing the test, you will be contacted by the Admissions Department via email or phone call to communicate the final admission decision and next steps
